A Little Quiz

So I was reading a friend's blog tonight and it linked to another blog, and so on (that's what happens when American Idol is not on TV as scheduled... heaven forbid I get off the couch and do some prenatal yoga... right?!!!!!) Anyway, one blogger had a cute pregnancy questionnaire that she updates weekly, she's super funny, so I'll try to be as amusing as I can without some of my lame Andrea humor, "...and then I found $20..." That's a shout out to you, ladies... you know who you are! :-)

Here goes nothing:
How far along? 14 weeks 1 day!
Total weight gain/loss: Down 2 pounds still.
Maternity clothes? Nothing yet... though I have a feeling that one day soon I'm just going to wake up and bam... I'll need to "work from home" because I won't be able to fit into anything besides sweatpants!
Stretch marks? No... I've been pretty religious about my cocoa butter-no-stretch-mark cream. Though if you read about it online it's genetic... so Mom, I love you and am selfishly sorry that Brucie and I gave you stretchmarks! Let's just blame it on Brucie :-)
Sleep: I slept 8 glorious hours last night.
Best moment this week: Well, I woke up this morning and thought I started to show a little bit... but, by the end of the day, I wasn't bloated anymore.
Movement: We saw it in the first ultrasound at 9 weeks... a dancing little salamander, but I haven't felt anything yet.
Food cravings: I'm sassy, I actually have a story for this... I haven't really been craving much, however, tonight, I didn't feel like leftovers again so I wanted pizza. I ordered it at 545. "Thank you, that'll be $16 and about 45 minutes." At 645, no pizza yet. So I called, "ooh it's on it's way" Translation "Sh*t, we forgot about your 1 pizza and need to still make it and get it out the door" So at 700 I call again, she apologizes and says that I'll get a free pizza the next time I order one... but do they realize that I AM PREGNANT AND WANT MY PIZZA NOWWWW!!!!!! I don't give two hoots if my next pizza is free! So finally at 715, my pizza arrives... it's not the pizza I ordered, but I don't care and proceed to woof down 4 pieces. Let's revisit the "weight gained" question tomorrow!
Gender: Since we're going to be surprised, I try to call the baby "baby" instead of "it." Today I feel like it's a girl, I called "it" a she.
Labor Signs: No, hopefully not for a while still.
Belly Button in or out? Hopefully the chicken timer will stay unpopped throughout.
What I miss: Being able to comfortably sleep on my belly.
What I am looking forward to: Hearing beautiful little heartbeats again on 3/9!
Weekly Wisdom: Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT make a pregnant lady wait for dinner.
Milestones: Sore ab muscles appearing this week, signs that baby is trying to make me a baby bump. :-)

13 weeks: energy, appetite and anniversary

1 trimester down, 2 to go! My energy level has been growing over the last few weeks and this week was great with tons of it. For most of the first trimester, I did not have much of an appetite and actually lost a couple pounds. Well just in time for our 2 year anniversary, my appetite was back.

Tuesday we went out for a fantastic dinner at Pearls Restaurant in Great Barrington. We originally wanted to go to Mario's just over the boarder in New York (they have amazing pop overs and we always have a good meal there) but they were closed. So after searching for a backup we figured we'd never been to Pearls so we might as well give it a try. GREAT CHOICE!!! We got edamame for an appetizer and I ordered a small fillet with french fries (just how Mom used to make them). Chip ordered a lobster and decided to shuck it himself. We were both really happy with our meals, so happy that there were no doggie bags to take home. I don't think I've had any red meat since I've been pregnant, so it was delish!!!!!

Next year if we want to go out to celebrate our anniversary, we'll have to plan on getting a babysitter :-)

I'm still fitting into my normal clothes comfortably, though yesterday and today my stomach and lower abs have been a little achy - I think maternity clothes are in my near future.

Today I had a burst of energy in the morning and ran some errands and did some cleaning around the house, but then I crashed in the afternoon and needed a little nap. I hope the energy I had this past week comes back tomorrow... I'd like to get the closet in the guest room (soon to be baby room) cleaned out so Chip can paint it (it's got old flowered wall paper on the bottom half and just plain plaster on the top).

Dana and Brady got our baby it's first clothes, little irish onesees with shamrocks and all! It occurred to Chip and I that we haven't even gotten anything for the baby yet, so I hope to be feeling good enough to get our first gift for baby :-)

Second appointment GREAT news at 12 weeks!!

Today we had our second appointment at 12 weeks 3 days. Our first appointment was with the nurse midwife of the practice, today we met my OB who is fantastic. We got a call from him last week after some of my blood work showed I'm a carrier of Cystic Fibrosis. I was obviously very shaken by this news, and immediately started to feel guilty that I could be the reason for our child also being a carrier or having this disease. He recommended Chip be tested too. So I did some research to learn as much as I could about the disease and the chances that Chip could also be a carrier (which were only about 1 in 800). After I learned as much I humanly possible in a day's worth of "googling" I was more confident that Chip's test would come back negative and we'd be back to having our perfect healthy baby.

Sure enough, the first news we received when the Dr walked into the examine room was "Great news... Chip's test came back negative!" So while there is still a very small chance the baby could have CF, the test searches for something like 90% + of the different types of CF, we were thrilled to hear the good news today.

The appointment was pretty quick, but we were lucky enough to hear the heartbeat for the first time through a doppler. We'd seen the heartbeat at our first ultrasound but couldn't hear it so this was an exciting milestone for us. I think I could listen to it all day long... beautiful little beats!!!!

Sharing the news with Chip's family and our friends

In keeping with our theme to tell as many people our good news in person, last weekend Chip went home for his grandparents' 60th anniversary party and was able to share the news with his sister, her children (who are now very excited to have a baby cousin) and his Dad. Everyone seems thrilled to welcome the newest member to the family this summer. Before and after the anniversary party he told his Grandparents and Aunts and Uncle and cousin Martha. This baby will be so loved.

I was unable to make it out for the anniversary party because my friend Kristi was in town, she lives in Sweden and I haven't seen her since our wedding 2 years ago, I really didn't want to miss out on this visit. We got together at Dana's where 2 of our other friends from college came into town too, Nicole and Tilley! I absolutely LOVE getting together with friends from school, it's like we've only been apart for a day instead of months or years. Dana is having a baby in early April, and even though we live about an hour from each other, we are already planning that our baby and theirs will either be best friends or boyfriend/girlfriend :-)

Telling everyone about the baby has been so fun, but also very nerve wracking. I don't know why, but ya just never know about how it will go, but everyone has been so excited, supportive, and have the kindest words to say to give us confidence. As far as telling coworkers, a few know, and my boss does, but I think it'd be kinda fun to not tell and see how people start to react to me getting bigger!

First appointment and ultrasound

Chip and I went to our first appointment on Jan 16th. It was pretty long but exciting for us. The midwife estimated our due date of August 25th. However, she's off by one day according to every calculator I've used online. Even the ultrasound woman calculated the date from my last period to be August 24th, so I believe the mid-wife is a day late :-)

She ordered an ultrasound for us to make sure that we were actually 8.5 weeks along and not more. So on Jan 20th (9weeks 1 day) we saw our baby for the first time! The baby was measuring at 8 weeks 6 days which would put the due date (by measurement of the length) at August 26th, so basically some time in late August, we'll have the baby!! ha! What a thrill and relief to see the baby's heart beating at 162 beats per minute and the baby was wiggling!!! It's alive and healthy!!! Whew!!!

Our next appointment is on Feb 12th with our OB. I have a few friends who have had him as their doc and really liked him compared to the others in the practice. I can't wait for the next appointment. Oh... and if you're wondering, we're planning to find out the gender of the baby... but not until August 24th or so - yes, we want to be surprised!

Below is a picture of the ultrasound. You can see the whole uterus, complete with baby and placenta. The placenta is on the left, the grayish thing bulging out on the left side of it. The baby is on the bottom, head to the left, if you look closely you can see the spinal column down the center. That is one beautiful baby!!!!!

Nausea and exhaustion... and the best husband anyone could ask for.

I started to feel nauseous the day after Christmas when we were bringing Mom to the airport. It was all day nauseousness, not just the morning. So that lasted from week 5ish to about week 9. I learned quickly that if I ate something every 1.5 hours, I could make the nausea bearable. Now at 10 and a half weeks I'm feeling a lot better with the occasional bout with feeling sick. It's certainly do-able now.

Sleepiness... who knew that building something the size of a poppy seed would be so exhausting!! During the same weeks I wasn't feeling great, I found myself hitting a wall by about 3-4pm each day not thinking I could make it the rest of the day.

This brings me to Chip - the best husband in the world! He has done a brilliant job of trying to make me as comfortable as possible. Picking up groceries after work, making dinner while I nap or zone out on the couch... even walking me out to my already heated car in the morning to make sure I wouldn't slip on the ice!! During the nights where I couldn't stay up later then 8, he'd even go to bed with me early so he wouldn't wake me up by getting into bed later on.

If possible, he seems more excited about having a baby then me! When we go to bed he says good night to the baby. One night that sticks out in my head when he was talking to the baby was right after we found out we were pregnant when he said "You're loved" and rubbed my belly. I love that man!

Christmas and sharing the news

Even though we were nervous to share the news so early, we decided to tell our parents and my brother, Bruce, and Megan on Christmas day. Chip and I picked up some frames and put a note in there that said "Merry Christmas Grandma! I'm excited to meet you in August" Replace Grandma with Uncle Brucie and Aunt Megan or Grandpa and Grandma J.

Mom came into town for the holiday on 12/23, it was so hard not to blurt our news when I first saw her, but luckily, I held out until Christmas morning like we'd planned. Dad and Janet came in on Christmas Eve, but Brucie and Megan couldn't make it home, so we sent them their frame with a note on the wrapping paper that said "Don't open unless you're on the phone with us." So on Christmas morning, with Brucie and Megan on the phone, Dad and Janet and Mom opened their gifts. I think Mom squealed, I can't quite remember seeing anything after that because she was squeezing me so hard I think I lost vision! Brucie was silent on the phone - similar reaction to what Chip and I had when we saw two lines! haha. Janet was giggling her happy giggle and Dad couldn't wipe that silly grin off his face the rest of the day!

My Grandmother came over a little while later, so we showed her the frames we'd given to everyone and she was just as surprised!

Chip's Mom, Chris, came into town on 12/27 and gave her a frame just like the ones we gave to my parents, she was also quite surprised. We're going to see Chip's Dad in Feb and will give him his frame at that time, we can't wait to share the news with him. I'm sure that will be a memorable Christmas for years to come :-)

"I think it's showing two lines..."

We found out we were pregnant on December 17th, 2008. I took a test before starting my day and was pleasently surprised, and very shocked to see two lines!!! I went into the bedroom and woke up Chip, asking if he was seeing what I was seeing. Shock, shock, excitement and disbelief were both of our first reactions with what we were seeing. The excitement set in more throughout the day while I was at work, which I know wasn't exactly a productive day, but can you really blame me? It's an unexplainable feeling to have the best news and not be able to share it just yet... I must have had the most ridiculous grin on my face all day.

We got home that night and I was anxious to get to Barnes and Nobel and pick up our first of many reads having to do with pregnancy. Chip and I headed there together after work and couldn't find any books having to do with pregnancy. We looked in the health section and a few other sections, but wouldn't you know, it was in the children's section under parenting. I think this is going to be a lonnng ride...

Our Story

I'm currently 10 weeks 4 days pregnant and wanted to start to document the excitement of our pregnancy before I forget all the ups and downs. In the next few posts I'll bring you up to date with what's been going on over the past two months.
